Snoring therapy and sleep apnea therapy has become a big topic in dentistry and it's becoming almost like a routine, you know, appliance there, routine approach for us.
Many dentists have started to work with sleep centers and sleep specialist in trying to help patients with options to help them sleep. And, you know, it is interesting how it's not necessarily the patient that we're helping, it's actually the spouse that we're helping because the spouse is the one that can't stand sleeping, you know, when they've got the snorer beside them.
And so, you know, sometimes it's the spouse saying, “Can you help my husband?” And so in doing that, basically we talk about whether the patient has had a sleep study because that's something that we encourage, a sleep study. And if the sleep study basically summarizes that it's not just a snoring problem, by all means, that's a simple, you know, there's a couple different appliances we use for treating snoring.
And then when it comes to actually having apnea convinced to where breathing can stop, I mean, that's a huge effect on cardiovascular health, you know, weight control, there's all sorts of medical considerations there. And so if we can help a patient with their sleep apnea then certainly patients can appreciate that because many patients are to the point where they're using CPAPs which are the large machines that flush oxygen into the lungs. And that can be a very big inconvenience for a patient, especially when they're traveling.
And so we've had patients come in and been using a CPAP for many years and if we can just say, “Well, do you want to try something different?” And many times they're eager because they've been having to deal with this inconvenience of this large machine in their mouth. We've been able to sort of help those patients transition from a CPAP to a snore appliance with success, really. And so that's a very nice thing to be able to offer, you know, a patient.

Enhancing Your Health & Daily Life With Snoring Solutions
We can treat your snoring problem by supplying you or your spouse with a custom-made snore guard. These guards work much like an athletic mouthguard or an orthodontic retainer, and they are much more convenient than CPAP (which requires you to wear a mask at night).
The snore guard is worn while you sleep and helps to reduce or even eliminate snoring by adjusting the position of your jaw. By doing so, the guard ensures your airway is unobstructed and open, which:
- Allows air to move freely through your nose and mouth while you sleep
- Allows more air into your lungs and helps you sleep better, without interruption
- Allows your bed partner to sleep more peacefully, too
Finding Out If Sleep Apnea Is Causing Your Issues
In addition to snoring, you could be waking up tired after a full night of sleep. You may feel dazed, lethargic, and even forgetful during the day. These are all signs of sleep apnea, a dangerous condition that has been linked to increased risk of diabetes, strokes, and heart attacks.
Our doctors will examine you in our relaxing office and may recommend a sleep study with a trusted specialist to determine if you are suffering from sleep apnea. Often, insurance will cover a portion of these costs.
