Brush Your Teeth After Eating
You should always brush your teeth before placing your clear aligners back in as you would on a normal day, however, it is also important to clean your teeth after eating or drinking sugary or acidic beverages. Ensuring your teeth are clean will help prevent any residue from sitting on your teeth and causing plaque and bacteria buildup.
Leave Your Aligners in While Eating
The only thing you should consume while wearing your aligners is water. Even gum and hard candy can damage or stain your aligners. One of the major benefits of clear aligners over braces is that they are removable. You can easily remove them to enjoy a snack or beverage, then put them back in after brushing your teeth.
Clean Your Aligners
Your aligners should be cleaned daily by removing them, scrubbing them with gentle soap and a soft-bristled toothbrush, and rinsing them with lukewarm water. You can also place them in a clear aligner cleaning solution during long meals, like dinner, to remove any food particles or residue. Cleaning your aligners does not take the place of your oral hygiene routine; both should be completed daily.
Use Abrasive Cleaners
Do not use a medium or hard-bristled toothbrush or toothpaste when scrubbing your aligners. The bristles can scratch the surface and the toothpaste can cause the plastic to look cloudy, making them noticeable during use. You should also never use very hot water while cleaning as this can warp the aligners and potentially affect your treatment timeline.
Keep Your Aligners Safe
Place your aligners in the same place–preferably their container–each time you remove them. Without proper care, clear aligners are frequently lost, damaged, or stolen by pets.
