Two Ways To Remake Your Smile

Posted on April 5th, 2016

Our smiles are an important part of who we are.

They show the world how we are feeling. They show our family and friends how much we care about them and their successes.

And they reveal how we feel about ourselves.

This is true whether we smile freely and easily or if we smile reluctantly. Why would someone be reluctant to smile? It could be because you feel embarrassed by your smile in some way.

Maybe you were born with long or misshapen teeth. Maybe you have what would be described as a gummy smile.

If you would like to change one of those things about your smile, contact Atlanta West Dentistry in Marietta, GA. Our dentists can give you a smile makeover with tooth contouring or gum reshaping.

What Is Tooth Contouring?

Human beings come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

That’s also true for individual parts of our bodies. Two people with the same body type may have very different hands.

Some people have small ears. Other people have large ears.

Even a relatively simple part like our noses look a lot of different ways on lots of different people.

So, it shouldn’t be a surprise that teeth come in a number of shapes and sizes, too.

We want to be clear. There is nothing inherently wrong with any shape or size of ear, noses, or teeth.

What matters is how you feel about it. In our case, we can help if you would like to change something about your smile.

Tooth reshaping is something we do on a regular basis in our office. When someone needs a dental crown to repair a tooth, we will remove the damaged or decayed parts of his or her teeth to make an abutment for the crown.

In cosmetic dentistry, tooth reshaping is done to improve the appearance of your smile.

Let’s say you have one tooth that is larger than the rest. This could make you feel self-conscious about your smile. It also could affect how your teeth fit together when you close your bite.

No matter your reason, our team can work with you to reshape any tooth you find problematic. We will work with you to help you get the smile that you want for yourself.

How To Change A Gummy Smile

If you have a gummy smile, then we probably don’t need to explain what it looks like to you. You’ve noticed how your parting lips reveal more gum tissue that teeth when you smile.

Gummy smiles can occur for a couple different reasons, and both of them can be fixed with a simple procedure called gum reshaping.

Gum reshaping is exactly what it sounds like. We remove part of your gum tissue to change the appearance of your smile.

If you have a large amount of gum tissue, it can cause your lip to rest higher than it does on other people. As a result, your pearly whites may be harder to see than you would expect.

The other reason you may have a gummy smile is because you have “short” teeth. This happens if your teeth don’t erupt very far when they emerge. For this reason, your teeth can look small in comparison to your gum tissue.

By removing some of the gum tissue, you will reveal more of your teeth, and your smile will look more balanced in favor of your teeth.

Why You May Consider A Smile Makeover

If you are considering a smile makeover, we encourage you to schedule a consultation at Atlanta West Dentistry.

Any of our dentists will be happy to discuss what you would like to change about your smile. We can discuss the specifics of what you would like your smile to look like, and we can show you how we can help make that happen.

Tooth contouring and gum reshaping are just two of the ways we can change your smile. Either of those procedures can be done on their own or in combination with some of our other cosmetic dentistry. You may want to consider teeth whitening, for example, to make your smile look as clean and healthy as possible.
