Treating Dental Problems Without Causing More Pain

Posted on June 1st, 2018

Waking up with a throbbing toothache. Cracking a tooth by biting into something hard. Having a tooth knocked out during a softball game.

All of these should be considered dental emergencies. They also are the last thing you want to experience, especially if you have dental anxiety. Doing nothing means your problem is only going to get worse, and doing something means, well, you have to go to the dentist.

We never want anyone to need emergency dental care, but if you do, we hope you will call (770) 941-6979 to get help at our office in Marietta, GA.

At Atlanta West Dentistry, we take a gentle approach that makes treatment easier to handle, especially in an emergency.

Pain-free Emergency Care

You are likely to experience some pain you are having a tooth infection, a cracked tooth, or a tooth that’s been knocked out of its socket. That can make the prospect of a dental visit even more intimidating.

Many people with dental anxiety are worried that their treatment will be painful. That won’t be the case if you come to us for help. With sedation dentistry, we can keep you calm and prevent you from feeling discomfort while we solve your problem.

During an emergency, our first goal is to address the immediate problem. Often, that means ending the pain that you are already enduring.

Laughing gas is one of the fastest ways to help you relax. According to many people, inhaling the gas puts allows them to feel peaceful. It also has the anesthetic effect, so you won’t feel any pain while we are treating the immediate problem.

Once we have that addressed, we can look at ways to get your smile back in shape. That could mean a root canal, a dental crown, or an implant placement.

Sedation Options

For better or worse, many patients made their first appointment with us because of an emergency situation. Some of them were patients who hadn’t been to the dentist in years. After seeing how we handled their emergencies, they have made routine care a part of their oral hygiene routine.

This is even though many of them will tell you that they still experience dental anxiety. They have just learned that dental sedation makes oral care easier to get through.

Again, laughing gas is fast and effective, but you may need something stronger just to sit in the dentist chair. If so, we would recommend oral sedation instead.

If you choose oral sedation, you must make arrangements for someone else to bring you to and from your appointment. You will take a dose of medication, and you will need to this some time to take effect.

We can assure you that we will not start any procedure, whether it’s a cleaning or something else until we are certain that you are feeling the pain-blocking and calming effects of the medicine.

And should you need more extensive treatment, we’ve got you covered with that, too. We are one of the few practices that offers IV sedation in our office. With IV sedation, you won’t remember anything about your treatment, but you will enjoy the oral health when it’s over.

Emergency or Not, We’re Here for You

Every patient should feel comfortable coming to the dentist. With dental sedation, you can trust that your care at Atlanta West Dentistry will be as pain-free as possible.

Call (770) 941-6979 or contact us online to learn more or to make an appointment. It just might save you from a dental emergency down the road.
