When is the last time you took a close look at your teeth? Maybe you leaned into the mirror, or you looked at a “selfie” trying to decide if you wanted to share it on social media.
If you could change anything about your smile, what would it be? If you said whiter teeth, then you have a lot of company.
Teeth whitening remains one of the most popular services offered in cosmetic dentistry for a very good reason. Whiter teeth look cleaner. Cleaner teeth look healthier. And healthy teeth make your smile look better.
If you have any doubt that teeth whitening is popular, just walk down the toothpaste aisle. How many products claim they can whiten your teeth? Dozens? More than one hundred? (It probably depends on where you are shopping.)
Not all whitening products are the same, and nothing you find in a store will be as effective as the professional whitening you can receive at a dentist office. At Atlanta West Dentistry in Marietta, we offer two product lines, KöR and Opalescence, to help our patients.
Wondering How Your Teeth Got Stained?
Spilling wine on a tablecloth can leave a stain right away if it’s not treated correctly, but stains on your teeth develop slowly over time. Many times the change is gradual that we don’t notice the stains until they have had years and years to set.
Cigarettes and other tobacco products may be the worst stain-causing agents that you can put in your mouth, but people who never use tobacco can have yellow, discolored teeth.
Almost everything you eat or drink (water being a notable exception) could cause stains if you consume enough of it over a long enough period of time. One cup of coffee isn’t going to turn your teeth yellow, but multiple cups every morning for 10 or 15 years probably will affect the appearance of your teeth.
The same is true if you drink a lot of tea (hot or iced), soft drinks, and sports drinks. The wine we mentioned early can stain your teeth as well. Lots of foods, even ones we consider healthy like tomatoes, strawberries, and blueberries, can leave a mark on your teeth, too.
It’s almost inevitable that as we get older our teeth are more likely to become yellow or stained. The longer you live, the more you will use your teeth to eat and drink.
Slow Down The Stains
You may not be able to stop staining completely, but you can slow it down.
It starts with good oral hygiene. Brushing and flossing your teeth reduces your risk of tooth decay. It also removes bits of food that may remain in your mouth after a meal or snack.
Drinking soft drinks and tea through a straw can minimize the contact between your teeth and your stain-causing beverage.
Right after a meal, rinsing your mouth with water can help remove stain-causing particles from your teeth.
Last, but not least, you need to visit the dentist for routine cleanings and care.
Get Results That You Can See
At any retail store, you can find mouth rinses, toothpastes, gels and trays, and white strips that claim they can whiten your teeth.
Some work better than others. Mouthrinses can take months of daily use before you can see any change. You may see some minor improvements with strips after a few weeks of consistent use.
But none of these work as quickly as the KöR and Opalescence whitening products that you will find at Atlanta West Dentistry.
KöR deep bleaching uses a combination of in-office and at-home treatments that can make your teeth up to eight shades whiter. KöR is one of the strongest and most effective whitening products on the market, which is why it is only available at dentists offices.
We offer two Opalescence whitening products. Again, these are more potent than the commercial product you’ll find just a few aisles away from candy and soft drinks. Opalescence Boost is for patients who prefer in-office treatments. Opalescence Go is a simple way to keep your teeth white at home.
