Stay Calm, Comfortable With Dental Sedation | Marietta, GA

Posted on December 24th, 2015

In the famous poem, “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” Clement Clark Moore wrote about a family lying down for their “long winter’s nap” on Christmas Eve.

While this poem celebrates the excitement of the night before Christmas, we haven’t found anything similar for the night before your dental visit.

While children and adult are eager for Christmas morning to arrive, but many people are filled with anxiety when thinking about the dentist.

We can’t promise you a “long winter’s nap,” but we can offer sedation dentistry at Atlanta West Dentistry. For patients in Marietta and the rest of Cobb County, sedation allows anyone to relax when they come for dental care.

How sedation dentistry can help

According to, between 9 and 20 percent of Americans avoid the dentist due because of fear or anxiety.

Based on the latest figures from the U.S. Census Bureau, it’s possible than more than 146,000 people in Cobb County stay away from the dentist because of their anxiety. We don’t want you to be one of those people.

We want you to be one of our patients. If you don’t come to us for preventive care, then you have a higher risk of needing us in a dental emergency down the road.

Sedation dentistry, or sleep dentistry, may help you get through your cleaning or other procedure. That’s why we offer sedation for our patients.

But don’t take our word for it, if you have time watch this video by one of our patients. He explains how oral conscious sedation dentistry (one of three types of dental sedation that we offer) has helped him feel more comfortable.

As he said, knowing that sedation is an option helps him feel more comfortable getting the dental care he needs at Atlanta West Dentistry.

Three types of sedation

As we mentioned, we have three levels of sedation at Atlanta West Dentistry. This allows us to help patients with mild anxiety and outright fear of the dentist. Our top priority is to keep your mouth healthy, and we know that we can do that better when our patients are relaxed and comfortable.

Here are the types of sedation you may receive when you come to our office:

  1. Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas

This is the least intense and least invasive form of sedation dentistry. This is a safe option for adults and children who may need a little help sitting through a cleaning or examination.

Nitrous oxide is delivered through a mask that covers your nose. As you breathe the gas, you will begin to feel pleasure. You may even feel as though you are asleep, although you will be able to respond to your dentist’s or hygienist’s requests to open or close your mouth or to turn your head in a certain direction.

The website is a great resource for people who have a fear of the dentist. This site is devoted to helping people understand their fears and to finding ways to deal with them.

One page on this site includes firsthand descriptions of what it’s like to receive nitrous oxide. To give you an idea how effective it can be, one patient wrote that nitrous oxide made him want to stay at the dentist. Now, we won’t promise you will feel that way, but we do believe it can make your visit easier to handle.

This is a fast-acting form of sedation, but it is also wears off quickly. When we turn off the gas, you will return to feeling normal shortly thereafter.

  1. Oral conscious sedation

This is a more powerful form of sedation dentistry. Patients who undergo oral conscious sedation take medication prior to their treatment.

It’s important that you have a family member or friend bring you to our office and take you home when you are finished. The effects of the medication will last for a while after your procedure is complete.

You are more likely to feel drowsy and you may fall asleep with this type of sedation. Either way, you will stay relaxed and comfortable throughout your dental care.

  1. IV sedation

This is the most powerful type of sedation we offer. This must be administered by a licensed professional. In general, this type of sedation is only used for longer, more complicated procedures.

As with oral conscious sedation, you will need someone else to take you home after your procedure, and you will want to rest when you get there.

Helping you face your fears

Sedation dentistry is a great way to make sure you receive the preventive dental care you need. This will keep your mouth healthy for decades to come.

At Atlanta West Dentistry in Marietta, we believe every patient in Cobb County deserves quality, comfortable dental care. Sedation dentistry is one way we make that happen.
