Maybe You Should Consider Sedation Dentistry

Posted on February 9th, 2016

When we visit our family physician, we expect him or her to be attentive to us. We want the doctor to notice our concerns, and we want the doctor to listen when we have questions.

In short, we want to know that our doctor cares.

At Atlanta West Dentistry, we believe you should expect the same kind of compassionate treatment when you visit our dentist office in Marietta, GA.

If you are a patient who experiences dental anxiety, we know just coming to the dentist office can be difficult. When you get here, we want you to feel supported, and we want you to know that we will do everything possible to ease your dental fear.

This is one of the reasons we offer sedation dentistry as part of our practice.

Why You Should Consider Sedation Dentistry

People experience dental anxiety for a number of reasons.

Maybe you had a bad experience as a child. Maybe your last dentist was not very caring.

Maybe you feel uncomfortable sitting in the dentist’s chair.

There’s no way we can list every reason you or someone else may feel anxious about coming to the dentist. We can give you some common reasons that make us confident that sedation dentistry (sometimes called sleep dentistry) can help you, however.

➤  No Pain, But A Lot To Gain

We don’t know if fear of pain is the biggest reason for dental anxiety, but we are pretty it sure it is one of the most common reasons. One of the many benefits of dental sedation is its anesthetic effects.

In modern dental practices like ours, we make every effort to minimize or eliminate any pain you might feel even if you are awake. But when you are under sedation, you will stay so relaxed that you won’t feel a thing.

➤ No Memories = No Worries

For some people, the sounds of dentistry are troublesome. Hearing the tools moving around is a reminder of the treatment that you are receiving. If you could get through the procedure with no memory of what happened, that would make everything better.

Well, that’s possible with sedation dentistry. It’s sort of like getting on a plane in Atlanta, taking a nap on the plane, and waking up at your destination. You may not remember anything about the flight, but you still get where you wanted to do.

With dental sedation, you can sit down and receive the dental care you need, but you don’t need to be aware of anything that is happening.

➤  No Reason To Be Nervous

When people are scared, they have a tendency to want to fight or they want to run away. Our dentists and hygienists definitely don’t want you to fight, but we don’t want you to feel like you need to flee, either.

If you are worried that you might get fidgety in the dentist’s chair, then sedation can take away your fears. You will feel relaxed, and you will be able to remain calm throughout your treatment with sedation.

➤ You Will Not Gag

If you gag easily, then you may have what is known as a hypersensitive gag reflex. This also may be a reason for you to feel concerned about coming to the dentist. After all, whoever looks at your mouth will be placing tools in there to treat and examine your teeth and gums.

We all know what can happen when someone gags. We are pretty sure you don’t want anything bad to happen, and we are positive that your dentist or hygienist doesn’t want that either.

Because sedation keeps your relaxed, you are naturally less responsive to those things that might make you gag when you are fully awake. This will allow you to get treated without anyone having to worry about what could come up.

Types Of Sedation

We offer three types of sedation dentistry in our office. We are confident that one of them will work for you whether you have moderate anxiety or severe fear of the dentist.

  • Nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas,” is safe, fast, and effective for children and adults. When you sit down, we turn on the gas, and your anxiety melts away. When we are finished, we turn off the gas, and you feel like yourself once again.
  • Oral conscious sedation involves taking a pill before your treatment begins. By the time you sit in the chair, you may be feeling drowsy or groggy, and you probably won’t remember much, if anything, about your treatment. You will need someone else to take you home, however.
  • IV sedation is the strongest sedation we offer. This is primarily used for patients who undergo longer and more complicated procedures. As with oral conscious sedation, you will need someone to drive you home because the effects will last well after you treatment is over.
