If you’re concerned about too much gum showing when you smile or feel that your teeth look too small because of your gums, gum reshaping may be right for you.

What Is Gum Reshaping?

Gum reshaping, also known as gum contouring, is a great option if you’re embarrassed by your gummy smile. Even if you have perfectly straight, white teeth, too much gum showing when you smile can make you self-conscious.

If they cover a large portion of your teeth, your gums can make your teeth look small. Gums that are too low can be caused by genetics, a health problem, or certain medications.

Fortunately, there are options available to fix your gummy smile and give you the confidence you deserve.

Gum Reshaping To Fix Your Smile

At Atlanta West Dentistry, we offer treatments to fix your gummy smile. We use modern technology that is virtually painless to reshape your smile also known as gum contouring or a gum lift. We use laser technology that allows us to work quickly and with precision.

That’s great news for you because it means less discomfort and less time in the chair. Thanks to our laser technology, you don’t have to undergo surgery to lift your gums.

Gum Reshaping: What To Expect

When you come in to see us for gum contouring, we will go through the entire process with you. We will even show you exactly how much gum we plan on removing, so you can get an idea of how dramatic your results will be. We will then use a mild local anesthetic to numb your gums before using our modern laser to reshape your gums.

During the procedure, we will seal the tissue after contouring to create the shape you want.

Although the procedure is practically painless, we understand that undergoing any dental procedure can be unsettling. We offer several options for sedation if you and your dentist agree it’s necessary. But chances are, you’ll already feel comfortable in our private operatories. We also offer TVs, blankets, pillows, and more to help you relax.

Our gum reshaping laser technique is a better option for you because it means less bleeding and a shorter healing time. Very little to no pain and bleeding means you can get back to normal and enjoy your brand new smile in no time at all.

It could take as long as a few weeks for your gums to heal entirely. To help cut down on your healing time, we typically suggest:

  • Over-the-counter pain relievers, as directed by us. Avoid aspirin because it can cause bleeding.
  • Eat soft foods and avoid foods with extreme temperatures. In the few days after surgery try sticking to foods like yogurt, eggs, soft vegetables, applesauce, or ice cream.
  • Until your gums have completely healed, avoid food with seeds and spicy food.
  • Follow the directions we give you after your procedure for brushing your teeth.

If you notice excessive bleeding or swelling or if you have any concerns, don’t hesitate to call our office. We want you to love your new smile and feel comfortable throughout the process.
