Comparing Veneers And Teeth Whitening | Marietta, GA

Posted on November 24th, 2015

When you are meeting someone for the first time — a date, your partner’s family, new co-workers — you want to make a good impression.

Whether you know it or not, many people are paying attention to your teeth. The Daily Mirror found in a recent survey that 58 percent of men said the first thing they notice about a woman is her teeth.

The Mirror also reported that 73 percent of people said their ideal partner would have a nice smile. By comparison, only 40 percent said their ideal partner would need a good physique.

Your teeth go a long way toward your first impression, and if your teeth are yellow or discolored, people may not be giving you a fair chance.

At Atlanta West Dentistry in Marietta, you can get that whiter smile with our teeth whitening options or with veneers, which are part of our cosmetic dental service.

What is teeth whitening?

We offer a variety of teeth whitening products. This means we can have products that fit your budget and your lifestyle. You may prefer to come to our office for treatment, or you may want a treatment you can do on your own at home.

No matter your preferences, we’ve got you covered.

If you prefer an in-office treatment, we offer Opalescence Boost. This is a chemically-activated gel. Unlike some similar products, this gel does not require a bright, hot light to become activated. In less than 60 minutes, you’ll be able to see a dramatic change in your smile.

Our at-home treatment is Opalescence Go. You can think of this as a high-end whitestrip. This is a prescription-strength treatment that you can use at home. It’s similar to the whitestrips you might find in a grocery or drugstore, but it is stronger that what you can buy in retail stores.

These whitestrips even come in a variety of flavors (like mint and peach), which make them easy to use.

We’ve found that a combination of take-home products and a chairside procedure often gives our patients the best results.

One way we do that is with KoR Whitening Deep Bleaching products. This system can make your teeth up to eight shades whiter.

During your first treatment, you will be in our office for about 45 minutes. Your treatment will include creating a custom tray based on an impression of your teeth.

You’ll want to brush your teeth, then apply the gel before putting the trays in while you sleep. You’ll do this for about two weeks.

After this, you’ll return to our office for a final bleaching to complete the process.

What are veneers?

If you’ve even replaced or added siding to a house, then you know how veneers work. Like siding, veneers change the exterior appearance of your teeth.

Modern veneers are made of a thin, durable porcelain. This leaves you with both a whiter and natural looking smile that can last for decades.

While veneers are an excellent means of achieving a white, brighter smile, they also can change your smile in others ways.

If you have gaps between your teeth, veneers can give your smile a more uniformly spaced appearance.

If you have crooked teeth or teeth that are misshapen in some way, veneers can hide those imperfections.

And if you have a chipped tooth or teeth, veneers can restore the look of a complete, healthy set of teeth.

Veneers do require some prep work to your teeth. First, we remove a thin layer of your teeth. This allows us to get an impression and craft veneers that will fit perfectly to your teeth without changing the shape of your mouth.

The veneers are extremely thin — a half-millimeter or less — which means the preparation to your teeth is minimal, and usually does not require any kind of anesthetic.

When the veneers are ready (often during the same visit you come for preparatory work), they are bonded and secured to your teeth. This gives you a new look that is just as functional as your original teeth.

Keeping your white smile

Of course, oral hygiene will remain important if you want to keep your sparkling white smile. Don’t consume too much wine, tea, coffee, or other stain-causing drinks. If you are using tobacco products, you should quit as this are likely to bring back your stains.

And always remember to brush and floss every day. This keeps down plaque buildup and can prevent more serious oral health issues.

If you are ready to have that movie-star smile, come to Atlanta West Dentistry. We’ll discuss the best way for you to get the smile you want. Call us at (770) 941-6979 or use our online form to make an appointment at our office in Marietta.
