You probably didn’t grow up using many of the things that are part of your daily life today.
Few people could afford cellular phone when they were first developed. Home computers have only become common in recently decades, and home internet service is something that many children now take for granted.
As much as technology has improved our day-to-day lives, it’s also improved how we provide dental care at Atlanta West Dentistry. That’s good for you and your family if you live in Marietta, Smyrna, or anywhere else in our part of Georgia.
If you are looking for a new family dentist to provide preventive care, then we welcome you to visit our office and find out more about our approach to dental care.
We all know people who have to have the latest (although not necessarily greatest) products they can find.
At our practice, we have added technology that makes your experience better, that helps us provide better care, or both. For our team, the motivation isn’t just to have the most up-to-date tools. Our motivation is to help our patients, however we can.
Here are some of the ways we are doing that.
★ The Wand
The Wand® is a wonderful tool to administer anesthetic for our patients.
Many patients experience dental anxiety, and needles are one of the most common causes of that anxiety.
Rather than using a syringe, The Wand uses computer assistance to carefully control how and how much anesthesia you receive.
This control has other advantages for you as well. The numbing sensation will keep you from feeling anything during your procedure, but you are less likely to experience numbness in parts in other parts of your mouth.
Our patients have also told us that this is a comfortable way to receive anesthetic.
★ Laser Dentistry
Many people are familiar with lasers primarily through science fiction movies. Often future or more advanced civilizations used lasers as weapons.
While that may be possible, we use lasers in a more beneficial way in our practice. Lasers can serve as both a diagnostic and a treatment tool.
One example of this is the DEKA CO2 laser. We frequently use this laser as part of our treatment of gum disease.
Before you get worried, you should know that this is one of the safest and gentlest ways to perform soft tissue treatments.
Lasers allow us to be more accurate when targeting infected gum tissue. That also means we are able to preserve more of your healthy tissue as well. With the laser, we are able to seal the tissue at the same time, which means you may not need any stitches, either.
If we did this same procedure with a scalpel, we would need to remove some of the healthy tissue to be certain that all the infected tissue was gone. This also leads to bleeding and is more likely to require stitches (and possibly an extra appointment to remove them).
As you may suspect, cutting into your gums is more invasive as well. With a laser, we aren’t cutting, which also means your gums can heal faster than they would with a scalpel.
★ Digital Impressions
Have you ever had impressions made? You may recall the taste of the gunk that someone slathered into a tray, which you then had to hold in your mouth.
For many patients, holding those trays can be uncomfortable, especially for patients with a sensitive gag reflex.
Today, we can usually avoid that process thanks to our 3M True Def Scanner. This scanner allows us to create a digital impression of your teeth using computer technology instead of gunk.
By scanning your teeth, the computer is able to assemble what that scanner “sees” into a three-dimensional image. This can help us in a few ways.
This three-dimensional model tells us more about the shape and locations of your teeth. This can be valuable when preparing for orthodontic treatment or a dental implant placement procedure.
When we understand the condition and location of your teeth and other oral structures, we are able to plan your treatment better than we ever have.
We want you and all our patients to keep your mouths as healthy as possible. The technology we use at Atlanta West Dentistry is one of the ways we are able to do this.
